Data Collection for Girls Education Challenge II (GEC II) - Independent Evaluation in Nepal

Data Collection for Girls Education Challenge II (GEC II) - Independent Evaluation in Nepal

Client: Tetra Tech, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)'s GEC

Year: 2021

Overview

To evaluate Mercy Corp’s project of Supporting the Education of Marginalized girls (STEM) in Kailali, the client required a local data collection partner. Rooster Logic was selected to be the local partner and hence conducted quantitative and qualitative assessment for the project. Girls survey and learning assessments (SEGRA and SEGMA) were used as quantitative data collection tools. Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and In-Depth Interviews (IDIs) were carried out for qualitative data collection.

Methodology

The scope of the project was in the Kailali region as defined by the client. The period of the project was 45 days. Through the human network of Sukarmis equipped with REMO, we collected over 1640 quantitative data that included the survey among girls and their learning assessment in terms of literacy and numeracy at secondary level. We were able to reach respondents from over 45 different schools in the district. Our research included in-depth insights from numerous FGDs and IDIs conducted among girls, their parents, teachers, local implementing partners, and respective personnels of local government.

We mobilized the field team that included many locals in the region for the project duration. Our experts were adept at handling sensitive topics that arose during the process of the research. A team of over 16 enumerators - an all-female data collection team, four supervisors for quantitative data collection, two senior and two junior researchers for qualitative data collection enabled Rooster Logic to carry out a large-scale project within a short time frame in the remote region of Nepal.
