Real Time Intervention of Nutrition

Real Time Intervention of Nutrition

Client: UNICEF

Year: 2016

Overview

UNICEF worked on 14 priority earthquake-affected districts of Nepal along with many nutrition cluster partners. They provided nutrition intervention in five selected building blocks. UNICEF partners had been collecting data to monitor the progress and to assess whether the intended target group had benefited or not. UNICEF realized that the then-current paper-based data collection method was time-consuming and untimely for decision-makers.

UNICEF partnered with Rooster Logic to transition from paper-based data collection method to technology-based data collection. The objectives of this project were: to prepare a customized real-time dashboard with access to various users on different authorization levels and train the Information Management Officer (IMO) on the developed tool and dashboard.

Methodology

The first step was to analyze the current paper and excel based data collection tools used by IMO’s from various health facilities of 12 districts. Next, we carried out consultation meetings with stakeholders involved in flowing information from health facilities to UNICEF. We developed a second-stage data collection tool in REMO for periodic reporting of various indicators. We then developed a real-time dashboard based on the collected indicators that automatically aggregates the data on different levels: Health Facility, UNICEF partner, District. The dashboard and auto-aggregation of data allowed for quicker monitoring and dissemination of required information for faster decision-making. After the development of the system, we provided training to all relevant stakeholders.

Through a combination of expertise and resources, Rooster Logic was able to manage data and develop technology-based solutions to aid in better and faster decision-making.
